Our Musical Heritage - Museum Exhibition
Opening Sunday September 17, 2000 running to January 2001
at the Marion and Ed Vickar Jewish Museum of Western Canada
Our Music Project Museum Exhibit includes artifacts, records and instruments and explores the social history of Jewish music and musicians on a thematic basis. The exhibit pays particular attention to individuals who contributed significantly to the musical and cultural life of the Winnipeg Jewish community: Benjamin Brownstone, Sara Udow, Noah Witman to name a few. Numerous photographs, long playing records, songbooks, musical sheets, programs, posters, costumes and musical instruments are on display, many for the first time. A sound station features the gamut of musical styles.

The book examines all types of music that have been prevalent in Winnipeg and profiles individual personalities that have made unique and enduring contributions to music, including: Sara Udow, Cantor Benjamin Brownstone, Jasha Resnitsky, Noah Witman, Leon Bell, Doris Margolis, Morley Meredith, Aaron Harlap, Paul Grosney, and many others. Beautifully produced, with quotations, anecdotes, a timeline of Winnipeg's Jewish musical achievements, and more than 100 photos. Approximately 500 copies of the book will be produced. Concert 1: Music Makers
Wednesday, October 18, 2000, 8:00 p.m. at the Berney Theatre
A recital by six of the city's finest musicians: Steven Field, Shannon Fingerote, Connie Gitlin, Eli Herscovitch, John Racaru and Laurel Ridd, will perform the works of Winnipeg composers Harry Freedman, Aharon Harlap (Aaron Charloff), Ben Steinberg, Peter Zvankin, and Sid Robinovitch. This concert was taped for future broadcast by CBC Radio.

Concert 2: The Brownstone Years
Sunday, November 5, 2000, 7:30 p.m. at the Rosh Pina Synagogue
An evening of Cantor Benjamin Brownstone will highlight his poetry, liturgical and folk music. Featuring Allan Blye and Miriam Breitman with cantors Arky Berkal, Gerry Daien and Richard Yaffe, the Boroditsky brothers, Brownstone family members, the Brownstone Alumni Choir and the Camp Massad Choir.

Concert 3: Musical Theatre Review
Thursday, November 16, 2000, 7:30 p.m. at the Berney Theatre
Hosted by Kayla Gordon, the artistic director of the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, this concert brings together many of Winnipeg's most versatile and polished performers singing a variety of hits from on and off Broadway. The show features an ensemble medley, as well as the performance of songs from such shows as Hello Dolly, Gypsy and Funny Girl. Many Jewish performers were well known for their roles within the Jewish Musical Theatre. This program highlights those individuals whose careers were established in the musical theatre in Winnipeg. Performers include: Kenneth Bell, Miriam Bronstein, Evelyn Hecht, Marvin Kaye, Debbie Maslowsky, Ron Meyers, Sarah Sheps, and Richard Yaffe, with Sheldon Laveman on the piano.

Concert 4: Yiddish Folk Music
Sunday, December 3, 2000, 2:00 p.m. at the Rosh Pina Synagogue
Our concert series concludes with a selection of Yiddish songs throughout the decades. Instrumentalists will accompany performances by a variety of choirs, quartets and soloists. Featured are Arky Berkal, Gerry Daien, Phyllis Dana, Evelyn Hecht, Alissa Kaplan, Avivah Katz, Shoshana Kravetsky, Phyllis Laveman, Tzivie Meyers, Mitch Parks, David Pesochin, Harvey Pollock, Rita Reichbart, Archie Stone and Noach Witman, plus Dee Yoon-geh Bahd-cho-neem, The Quartet Plus Singers, The Stay Young Choir and the Winnipeg Yiddish Choir.
