Jews In Winnipeg's Garment Industry
Oral History Project

The Jewish Heritage Centre is embarking on the development of an exhibit on the history of the contributions of Jews to Winnipeg’s garment industry. The first phase consists essentially of an oral history component which encompasses interviews with individuals representative of the industry’s various sectors. Sharon Chisvin and Mona Rich have been recruited to carry out the interviews and to date have acquired an impressive amount of information which will be used for the exhibit and future research purposes. The Heritage Centre gratefully acknowledges the Province of Manitoba’s Heritage Grants Program, the Winnipeg Foundation and Jewish Foundation for providing the financial assistance needed to carry out this initiative.

JEWS IN WINNIPEG’S GARMENT INDUSTRY

A major exhibit, curated by Stan Carbone.

To be on display at a downtown Winnipeg location. Now in its Research Phase.

From its emergence in the late 1800s as a cottage industry reflective of the early years of capitalism to its metamorphosis into a complex, elaborate entity employing a labour force emanating from all parts of the globe, the garment industry has had an incalculable impact on Winnipeg’s socio-economic and cultural development. Jews have played a fundamental and determining role throughout the course of this transformation.

The Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada is in the early stages of conceptualizing the creation of an exhibit that will look at the exciting history and contemporary relevance of this industry, its relation to Winnipeg’s Jewish and broader community, and the personalities, social forces and technological changes that have contributed to its evolution.

We hope to employ a variety of techniques to ensure a visually exciting result and consequently to do justice to the importance of the subject at hand. We are putting together a blue ribbon team of people, some of whom are rooted in the garment industry, others from the world of academia, the trade union movement, etc. who will ensure a well rounded and multidimensional exhibit. We are also working toward building partnerships with a range of educational institutions and museums to make this into a truly broad – based community enterprise.

Our aim is to galvanize the intellectual and creative energies of all the components mentioned and to make this into the most riveting and stimulating exhibit produced to date by the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada.

Want to be involved ... call Stan.
